Answer: Myths, surrounding Stalin have played a major role in the construction of Stalin’s reputation, in both a positive and negative way. This essay will look at Plate 1.5.8 in the illustration book, and discuss how the myth of Stalin presented in this image differs from earlier and later mythic presentations of him.
Stalin shaped his regime using strategically planned propaganda, including, a series of cultivated posters to immortalise and glorify his leadership. These state-manufactured images created a ‘cult of personality’ associating him with every aspect of Soviet society. Stalin controlled the media, and according to historian Moshe Lewin Stalin was effectively, ‘becoming the system’ (Lewin in Pittaway, 2008, p.137).
