Question: Analyse the effects you would want to create for your audience through your presentation of the relationship between Silvio and Clarice.
Briefly outline and justify your casting decisions for the pair and then discuss how you would direct your actors, in at least two scenes where they appear together, in order to achieve your aims.
Answer: In the sixteenth century commedia del’arte was heavily improvised with a skeletal plot. However when Goldoni became the artistic director of Commedia he scripted ‘A Servant to Two Masters’ with the original style in mind, the major difference is that Goldoni wanted the play to have a realistic style, with three dimensional character’s that would be relatable and realistic. As Goldoni’s main intention was to make his audience laugh, Goldoni included Lazzi’s physical and verbal mistakes or blunders to create comic effect.
Therefore my presentation of Silvio and Clarice will stay true to the original Commedia style by presenting their relationship like the ‘innamorati’ who were stock character’s playing ‘The Lover’s’, as my intended effects on the audience are to make them laugh I will have them over emphasised and pathetic in their love for one another.
