Question: Examine the effectiveness of crime prevention strategies in preventing crime. (12 marks)

Answer: All societies have ways of ensuring their members conform to their values and norms with the intent of maintaining some kind of social order and structure. They ensure that deviant and criminal behaviour is discouraged – this involves behaviour which breaks social norms and goes against shared values. There are typically four main approaches to crime reduction. These are structural/ societal, individual, situational or environmental. Society sets up formal methods to enforce social control. In modern society, this mainly involves institutions which create and enforce the law – for example, the police and the judiciary and prison service.

Structural/societal approaches look at the basic causes of crime in society. For example, they argue that crime is generated by inequalities in society, such as differences in income and wealth, or by inequalities of opportunity. Crime reduction...(short extract)
