K316 Exploring practice

Answer: The aims outlined in TMA01 were to explore accessibility to different emergency services in the residential care setting, that may not be appropriate to ring 999. The objective is to explore what else is available to ultimately improve outcomes and standards.

The question arose during a consultation with a representative from the Ambulance Service. It enabled the service to see exactly how many 999 calls were being made, with additional information such as how many calls resulted in transportation of the resident to hospital or how many remained in the residential setting. It was alarming at the level of unnecessary 999 calls that did not result in transportation to hospital, raising the question of what other services are available in emergency or urgent situations which would result in better resident outcomes and better utilisation of 999 resources.
