Answer: Protocols are official procedures or systems in place and guidelines are general rules and principles. However, with working in health and social care, both come under the same umbrella. These guidelines and protocols are developed by organisations such as The Care Quality Commission (CQC), who publish information about health and social care on its website, as well as The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), who produce evidence based guidelines for practitioners. It is also suggested that care users should be included in the development of the protocols, however this does not always happen.
