Question: In an essay of not more than 1200 words, discuss how Wallace defined the boundaries of ‘science’ and consider whether his definition affected his reputation as a scientist.

Answer: Throughout his scientific career Wallace was never bound by social obligation or by class restrictions. From an early age his upbringing and life experiences were very different to those of other scientists including his early colleague in similar fields, Charles Darwin. Whilst upbringing and social responsibilities left Darwin with everything to lose in the scientific community, Wallace on the other hand had everything to gain from achieving notoriety, regardless of whether he was considered to be a radical or not. Answer: “What do you read, my lord?” Polonius asked. And with all the method that was in his madness Hamlet scornfully replied, “Words, words, words.” Though this was in the beginning of the seventeenth century, till today realists like the eponymous Shakespearean character, Hamlet, continue to speak of words in the same condescending stress. Question: “Wallace was an outsider, so it’s no wonder we don’t remember him as a great scientist. He didn’t limit his research to proper scientific subjects.” Respond to these assertions in an essay of 1200 words, drawing on your study of the History of Science discipline.

Answer: Alfred Russel Wallace was a prominent nineteenth century scientist. He was a self-made man, having left school at fourteen to pursue a surveying career in Wales for several years before turning his attention to evolution – studying at first in South America and later in the Far East. As well as being one of the century’s most noted scientists having written ten major scientific books, he was also one of the most controversial, far ranging in his interests and beliefs. Many of these lines of interest were away from the mainstream; possibly the reason why he is not one of the most well remembered scientists today.......(short extract) to download the full answer, please Sign in or Register then make a payment or submit an essay
