Answer: In your role as HLTA you could be supporting children or young people with additional needs or a disability. You will need to know about the entitlements which those pupils have and the laws which affect the provision which schools make for them. Legislation relating to disabled children and those with special educational needs are:

• UN Convention on the rights of a child
• Every Child Matters 2004
• The Equality Act 2010
• Children’s and family Act 2014
• Special Educational needs and disability Act 2001
• The Special Educational Needs code pf practice 2001
• The New Special Educational Needs and Disability code of practice 0-25 years old 2014
