Answer: The term ‘safeguarding’ is often interpreted as meaning safeguarding children and young people. However, adults need safeguarding too, often due to their reduced ability to protect themselves from harm. Adult safeguarding duties apply to an adult who has: – “Care and support needs, and Is experiencing, or is at risk of, abuse or neglect, and is unable to protect themselves because of their care and support needs”. (SCIE, online, 2015)
Safeguarding adults includes: Protecting their rights to live in safety, free from abuse and neglect; People and organisations working together to prevent the risk of abuse or neglect, and to stop them from happening; Making sure people's well-being is promoted, taking their views, wishes, feelings and beliefs into account.
