Answer: In this essay I will outline the similarities and differences between Adorno et al.’s (1950) and Altemeyer’s (1981) approach to authoritarianism. I will do this by firstly, outlining the essence of Adorno et al.’s (1950) approach, followed by Altemeyer’s (1981) approach to authoritarianism. I will then compare them, detailing the specific similarities and differences. Finally I will summarise my findings.
The starting point for Adorno and his colleagues research was that people’s attitudes was a direct reflection of their personality characteristics. For this reason, they began by attempting to find out about peoples personalities by measuring their attitudes. Although Adorno and colleagues were interested in finding out people’s attitudes toward anybody who was of a different ethnicity to the ordinary American citizens they were questioning.
