Answer: TMA 03 Attachment can be defined as a bond between mother and child. The security provided within this attachment could play an influential role in the strength between them influencing future development. For this reason it is crucial to understand development of attachment in children and why particular behaviours have been adopted.
With this in mind the famous words of Mary Ainsworth come to mind “Never miss an opportunity to hold a baby” (The Open University, 2014). Ainsworth was a psychologist who passionately strove to change the way the health service functioned from the misunderstanding that holding a baby encouraged the spread of germs etc (The Open University, 2014). She joined John Bowlby’s research team in 1950 who developed the concept of attachment however, it was Ainsworth who pioneered the assessment of attachment and developed the Strange Situation procedure.
