Answer: Most people understand ‘work’ as an everyday term for employment. However, the definition is complex as work may be paid or unpaid, hidden or visible (Mythen, 2012, p103), so social scientists use concepts and theories to help understand what work means in the social world and how it is experienced by individuals. This essay considers two of these concepts: ‘structure’, defined as ‘the relatively stable and enduring arrangements, institutions and organisations which make up the social world’ (Banks, 2012, p146) and ‘agency’, defined as ‘the capacity to act freely according to one's own choices, intentions and desires’ (The Open University, 2018), within the frameworks of Marxism, feminism and Rational Choice theory, and compares how they promote social science understandings of work.
