Answer: In researching and understanding the relationship between work and leisure, social scientists have utilised multiple concepts. Within the following essay, I will outline two core concepts relevant to this area, those of agency which is defined as “The capacity to act freely according to one's own choices, intentions and desires.” (Banks & Barnett, 2012) and social structure and explore the differences and similarities between them.

Commencing with social structure, which social scientists acknowledge to be “stable and enduring social institutions, organisations or arrangements that make up the social world, and that appear to exist independently of individuals and their agency” (Banks & Barnett, 2012).
