Question: TMA 03 Describe the argument that inequality constrains a consumer society.

Includes essay plan.

Answer: This paper explores the claims that inequality constrain a consumer society. It will begin by exploring Zygmunt Bauman’s (1988;) claims that we no longer live in an industrial society but a consumer society that is not an equal society and the concepts he introduces to us ‘the seduced’ and ‘the repressed’. Moving onto the argument that consumption could be used to express individuality and personality, portrayed by Warren Susman (1970). The paper will then go on to explore the argument that a consumer society produces both ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ and whether those with more power, like the big supermarkets, make our lives less equal.
