Answer: TMA 03 Part 2: In this essay I will describe the argument that advertising constraints individual identity. Firstly, I will define what both advertising, individual identity and consumer society mean in the context of this argument. Secondly, I will identify and outline different concepts that support the argument that advertising constrains identity. To do this I will draw upon the works presented by Zygmunt Bauman who outlines that contemporary society is divided into two groups of consumers – the ‘seduced’ and the ‘repressed’ (Hetherington and Harvard, 2019, P.125). I will also use Zukin’s theory that consumption is “our most creative and controlled behaviour” (Harvard ad Revill, 2019, P191). Lastly, I will identify different types of advertising how they impact individual identity.
