Question: TMA 01 Drawing on what you have learned about City Road from the Making Social Lives DVD and Learning Companion 1, outline some of the inequalities on a street which you know.
Answer: I have taken as my topic Morningside Road in Edinburgh which is a main arterial road from the South West to the city centre some 2.5 miles away. In this respect it is similar to City Road, Cardiff which is also a main arterial road into its city centre.
Morningside Road has a high volume of housing built in the tenement manor which means there can be about 20 flats in a small space almost like mini skyscrapers. Shops were built at pavement level making these tenements practically self-sufficient. This is in direct contrast to City Road.
It is a middle class area with a high proportion of elderly residence and young professional families. There is little cultural diversity. Properties are highly sought after and it has always been a desirable area in which to live.
