Answer: Introduction
This report will examine the challenges to expert knowledge in understanding and managing risk. It will look at the definitions of risk and expert knowledge as well as two case studies of how certain risks are identified. Additionally this report examines the roles expert and lay knowledge play in each case study and how these are perceived by society.
The report will also look at German sociologist Ulrich Beck’s theory of Risk Society that has replaced Industrial Society and how focus has shifted from distribution of wealth to distribution of harm. Finally it examines how the science of epidemiology plays a role in identifying and managing risk and is often translated into public health advice.
