Answer: The circumstances surrounding the collapse of a land-based multi-national empire, ostensibly as a direct result of defeat in an expansive war involving most of the ‘great powers’ of the day, might seem totally different from those concerning the forced withdrawal of a maritime empire from an overseas colony some 140 years earlier. However, while differences are considerable, some similarities do exist between the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the end of the First British Empire following American Independence. This essay will compare and contrast some of the disparate factors that merged to influence imperial decline. These can be categorized as ‘pericentric’, for example the pressures of diverse culture, religion and nationality within the colonies; ‘metrocentric’, including the role of imperial government and the monarchy; and ‘international factors’ ...(short extract)
