Answer: The Papal division of the world by the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494 enabled Spanish and Portuguese hegemony in the western and eastern hemispheres, respectively. One might assume broadly-similar Iberian nations would establish broadly-similar empires in their spheres of influence. However, marked differences in the nature of the two empires suggests marked differences in the circumstances underpinning the establishment of the empires, and the evolving circumstances as the empires expanded. This essay will compare and contrast some aspects of these circumstances, including the nature of the imperial centre (or ‘metropole’); the factors affecting imperial expansion; the types of colonies established, and by what method.
