Answer: How important was war to the expansion and development of the state? Goodrich and Lawrence point out that ‘there is very really very little that has not been cited by historians at some point as vital to the development of nation states’ (Goodrich and Lawrence, 2011, p. 123). War has a part to play in the development and expansion of the state, but, the impact to which it is a significant factor is dependent on many other factors.

The specific context that war played in the development and expansion of the state differs between both the singular events themselves and the development of the state over time. It was important to the development of the state in France during the post revolution period with Napoleon’s expansionist wars as it needed to facilitate this expansion.
