This epigraph is making direct reference to the iconoclastic destruction of religious symbols and idols during the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, and comes from Frans Hogenberg’s 1570 etching, “The Iconoclasm”. In this essay I will use this epigraph and relate it to how the power of things and authority were relevant within the reformation.

The Protestant Reformation could be seen to have begun when Martin Luther nailed his disagreements with the Catholic Church to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenburg in 1517 (Grell et al, 2014 p.174).
